The Cradle of Literacy: The Baška Tablet

Discover the secrets of the Baška Tablet, a thousand-year-old stone monument that defined the Croatian identity and literacy.

Created around the year 1100, the Baška Tablet (Bašćanska ploča) is arguably the most important cultural monument of the Croatian people. Found in the Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor, near Baška, this limestone slab is inscribed with the Glagolitic script, the oldest known Slavic alphabet.

A Royal Document

The text of the tablet documents a donation of land by King Zvonimir to the Benedictine monastery of St. Lucy. Beyond its legal significance, the tablet is a founding document of Croatian literacy, as it contains the first mention of the name “Croatian” in the Croatian language and in the Glagolitic script.

Visiting Jurandvor

Today, the original tablet is kept at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, but a faithful replica remains in the Church of St. Lucy. Walking through the quiet valley of Jurandvor, one can still feel the weight of a thousand years of history under the stone vaults of the church.
