Cycling to the Moon Plateau (MTB)

If you would love to see what it is like on the Moon, visiting the Moon Plateau above Baška is certainly a more affordable and physically rewarding option. This is a strenuous trail, designed primarily for active mountain bikers and enthusiastic cyclists.

The Ascent to the Moon

Starting in the centre of Baška, the route takes you on an impressive uphill ride through shaded pine forests. Be sure to stop at the magical viewpoint in front of the Church of St John the Baptist. As you climb, the lush vegetation gives way to a rocky, otherworldly desert.

The Lunar Landscape

Once you reach the plateau, you are greeted by a mesmerising, wind-swept landscape. The strong bora wind has shaped this terrain into a true lunar surface. Kilometres of ancient dry stone walls and sheepfolds, known locally as mrgari, highlight the deep historical connection between the islanders and this rugged nature. The panoramic views of the Velebit mountains and the sparkling Kvarner Bay will stay in your memory for good.

The Descent

After exploring the rocky plateau, prepare for an exhilarating meandering downhill ride towards luscious vineyards and pastures. Stop by the Mošuna restaurant near Portafortuna for refreshment before cycling back to Baška via the off-road section along the Vela Rika stream.
